The ACCESS Programs Employee Assistance Program

The way an ACCESS Programs EAP works is a prime example of partnership in action, developed by employers and unions to respond to a need to resolve common problems. For a low annual or sessional cost, the employer can offer a high-value service to employees. The EAP demonstrates care and concern for the well-being of employees and addresses the ten to fifteen percent of employees whose work-related and personal problems are negatively impacting on their effectiveness at work. Problems are far more likely to be addressed early if there is an accessible, no-cost option which prevents escalation.

Advantages to Employers
Work-related and personal problems, both visible and invisible, can be a very high cost in any business. Lower productivity, higher health and accident costs and lost innovation are just some of the more obvious negative outcomes of problems which are not addressed. Employees with problems are likely to result in costs almost twice as high as those for employees without problems. The EAP fee, calculated on a per employee per annum basis or charged on a sessional fee-for-service basis, will ensure that employees have free access to services which will assist them to deal with problems in a confidential setting.

Advantages to Unions
Unions support the EAP because it offers employees an opportunity for resolution of problematic issues, and presents an option that maintains the dignity of the employee as well as meeting the employer and organisational needs. The benefits are obvious at the personal, union, and organisational levels.

Advantages to Employees
The broad ranging services offered by modern EAPs give employees support to deal with all types of problems, whether work-related or personal. Because EAPs offer totally confidential support to deal with a range of issues, employees feel comfortable about making an appointment - there is no stigma attached to the process, and early intervention is more likely.

The fact that the EAP service is paid for by the employer demonstrates to employees that they are working in an organisation that cares for them as people, not just as workers. This can generate mutual respect and loyalty. The value of the EAP is reflected in higher morale, more positive attitudes to the workplace, and greater individual well-being.

The EAP is accessible to and accepted by everyone, and has advantages for everyone.
